Fantastic Tips For Newbie Runners

If you have read my blog before, you will know that I am an absolute fitness (and beauty) fanatic. I love fitness and exercise and do my best always to stay in shape. My favourite type of exercise is running, and while I am always happy to try new things, running has always been my favourite workout.

The other day, while out for a particularly long run, I got to thinking about new runners and how overwhelming it is to be a newbie runner. There is so much information about running available, that it can be really overwhelming and stressful for new runners. That’s why I decided to put together a basic guide to running for new runners.

Here’s my top running tips for newbie runners:

Get the right shoes

As most runners will probably agree, the most important first step to taking up running is making sure that you have the right shoes. Investing in a pair of the best running shoes for women is the key to ensuring running comfort and preventing injuries.

When choosing running shoes, don’t just pop into a sports store, instead visit a specialist running store. By visiting a specialist running store, you can make sure that you pick the best shoes for your foot shape, as well as size. This may not seem important, but believe me, the small things like this, really are.

Always warm up and cool down

No matter how short the distance is you are preparing to run, it is crucial that you always warm up and cool down. You might not think that warming up is important, but it really is. Doing a warm up before exercise lets your body know that it needs to get ready to start working soon.

Start your run with a brisk walk and then begin to jog gently. Do this for around five minutes and then stretch, before starting to run.

Far too many runners ignore the importance of cooling down, but it is just as important as warming up. Just like warming up, end your run with a slow jog, followed by a brisk walk.

Don’t worry about your pace

Remember, you’re a beginner, so there is no need to stress about your pace. As a running newbie, your first few runs should be at an easy pace so that you don’t injure or push yourself too far.

To begin with, you may even want to start off with a walk/run approach and then build up your stamina and speed from there. Start by running for a minute, then taking a 30-second walking break, then repeat. As you increase your fitness level, you can then up the running time and reduce the walking period.

Don’t do too much

Many running newbies make the mistake of getting over excited and attempt to run too far, too soon. This almost always ends in injury or other problems and is not a good idea.

Don’t worry about how many miles you can do, focus on improving your fitness levels and stamina. You can always start to push yourself as you improve, but for now, don’t over do it.

  1. Very good tips! I have yet to get myself outside to run ( I think I’m slightly embarrassed ), but will keep running on my home tread mill and working on advancing a level on my couch to 5k app.
