The Girl You Left Behind

The Girl You Left Behind

The 2014 Blogger Challenge’s 3rd topic is about a recently-read book. I just had to write about The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes. It’s been a long time since I stayed up all night to read a book, but I didn’t get to sleep until 3am reading this (and at some points during the night I was awkwardly crouched near an outlet because the battery on my tablet was running low).

The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes
I’ve been binge-reading Jojo Moyes since I read Me Before You. I have really enjoyed her books, but The Girl You Left Behind was really special.

This novel covers two stories – modern-day London and occupied France during World War I. Despite the century that separates these two stories, they are very much intertwined.

Before reading this book, I read the short novel Honeymoon in Paris. Honeymoon in Paris by Jojo MoyesThis prequel to The Girl You left Behind relates the difficulties facing both sets of newlyweds. I didn’t realize it was a prequel until I read The Girl You Left Behind.

I do have one minor complaint -SPOILER-ISH
.
.
.
Not once in The Girl You Left Behind was it mentioned that Liv and David had seen the Γ‰douard’s painting of Sophie while they were in Paris. That would have been a wonderful way to tie the two stories together even more, and to explain Liv’s attachment to the painting.

Thanks Gaby for hosting this link-up!

  1. πŸ™‚ I have always loved to read, and binge.
But, I have a list of books too. Not such great ones though.
Hope you win the challenge! xx

  2. I’ve literally got about two chapters left of The Girl You Left Behind… I had to really quickly scroll down when I saw your “Spoiler Alert” – so thanks for putting that there. I would have been gutted if I had carried on reading and read something that I’ve not got to yet!

But I am loving it. I’ve been reading it really slowly, like a chapter or two a night, but it’s kept me hooked! Jojo Moyes is a great author. Her book ‘Me Before You’ is also fantastic, so I can recommend that too.

I’m also part of the #2014BloggerChallenge and posted about my favourite book of 2013 – I Am Pilgrim, by Terry Hayes: http://www.shabby-chic-home.com/2014bloggerchallenge/book-review-i-am-pilgrim

  3. I read Me Before You recently and really liked it — I keep hearing The Girl You Left Behind being recommended, so I hope to read it soon. So many books, so little time… I’m currently reading this really weird mystery (The Shadow of the Wind) and I’m about the abandon it. I feel like I just read and read and I’m still only halfway done.)

I'd love to hear from you
