2014 – Starting as I mean to carry on

Happy New Year!

Today I slept in a bit, and was woken up by the stealth bomber flying over my neighborhood en route to the Rose Parade. Last year , we saw it while hiking. So exciting!

The Workout of the Day was Insanity Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs.

Pure Cardio is probably my favorite workout DVD of all time. I reviewed it here. My sister did it with me last week – I think she’s a fan now too.

I also washed all of my makeup brushes, gave myself a chemical peel, laid out my work clothes, and packed tomorrow’s lunch (PB&J and raw veggies for snacking). I am starting the new year as I mean to carry on, with good habits and organization.
Now if only I could off the internet and get to bed for a 5am wakeup.

Workout Wednesday Link Up

Today’s workout was P90X Shoulders & Arms. This is one of my favorites. I was determined to bring it today and I did!

BRING IT!

Since we’re in Phase 3 of P90X, we haven’t done this workout in a while and I’ve missed it! And I’m really happy to see how I’ve progressed. One of the key elements of P90X is writing down each exercise – how many reps, what weight or band did you use – so you can really see how your body is getting stronger as you go along. It’s very encouraging to know that two months ago, I couldn’t do as many chair dips as I did today.

Then we followed up with Ab Ripper X. Each move should be 25 reps, but there are a few where I just can’t quite get there (V-up Roll-ups, I’m talking to you). But I’m getting closer each time.

Intermittent Fasting – The Day After

Last night, I could not sleep for hunger. My stomach was rumbling and I felt nauseous. This morning I scarfed like I was getting paid for it, but when I’d eaten 800 calories by 10am I knew I had to put on the brakes and start moderating again. Trust that I would be the one person to indeed gorge on feast days, despite what the UIC researcher said. This bums me out because I was looking forward to ditch calorie-counting entirely. Alas, it is not to be. Ever.
My total calorie expenditure for the day is ~2400 calories, so I’m capping myself at ~2000.

BUT! as much as I suffered yesterday, I think fasting is worth it. Today I feel incredible. I was full of energy and enthusiasm, instead of moping around because I’m a professional failure funemployed. I went to the gym and did Couch to 10K, Week 5, Day 2, and I did the running portions at 5.7. 5.7!! When I did P90X Shoulders & Arms, I did the same amount of reps that I did last week, but with the next heavier weights. My 3-mile walk home from the gym was at a faster pace than normal.

I don’t know what it is – adrenaline? Lack of food hangover? Who knows. Tomorrow is another IF day and I’m hoping I get used to the hunger, and Friday is another high-energy day.

Today I went to the gym, taking full advantage of the time that funemployment affords me! I started out with Couch to 10k, Week 5 Day 1 (out of a 14-week program). I’m going to try to pick up my pace a little bit; today I started at 5.5 for the running portions, increasing up to 6.0 for a minute at a time.

I have a new app too – 10K for Pink. As much as I appreciated the podcasts from Kissmyblackass.org, I needed new music! My own music! This new app uses my own playlists, but I can’t seem to get verbal cues when my iPod auto-locks. Maybe I have to buy the paid app for that feature.

I also did P90X Chest & Back. I’ve discovered that using the worksheets only rather than the DVDs or the app, I can get the workout done in ~35 minutes. I just max out my reps and move on. I do miss the Hortonisms a bit though.

Weekend Workouts

It’s the weekend! Unexpectedly, I have Monday and Tuesday off (that’s the life of a temp for you) so it’s a long weekend for me!
Yesterday was a 10ish-mile hike in the Angeles National Forest. Since it was a sunny day, I thought the Gabrielino trail would be good since most of it was inside the forest and a lot cooler. It was a lovely hike and a beautiful day! There were a few unshaded portions of the trail which exposed us to stunning vistas like this.

Today I went to the gym and did Couch-to-5K, Week 6 Day 1. I did the running portions at 5.7 on the treadmill! I usually jog at 5.0. I’m very excited to be improving at speed and stamina.  I jumped in at Week 4 since I’d completed this program last summer, and I can still keep up. This Couch-to-5K program works.

After my run, I did the Blogilates Stretching video and Blogilates Intense Abs. I will master Intense Abs. I WILL.
I’m still not loving running. But when I’m done with it, I’m happy and energized for the entire day. And I love the feeling of accomplishment.

I think this upcoming 10K will not be the disaster I’m fearing after all!
