Humpday Confessions – The Gym Edition

Vodka and Soda

I’ve got a lot to say about this category, so no dithering around – we’re going to get right to it.

  • People who comment on my food choices, be they healthy or indulgent. Please also see my earlier rant about assigning moral value to food here.

  • Butt sweat on the bench. Clean that nasty mess up!
  • People who workout RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE WEIGHT RACK. Yes, I know there’s a mirror there and you like to see yourself curl and flex your biceps, but other people need access to the dumbbells, too!

  • I’m not the gym truancy officer! I like to work out, maybe you hate it. None of my business, so no need to offer up excuses why you don’t exercise.
  • Workout partners who bail.

  • I’m annoyed with myself for getting on the scale this week.
  • Gym selfies – are you there to work out or to model?! Oh wait, that’s me.  But I only took it to show the dude working his biceps in front of the weight rack. Yes, that’s the reason.

  • How cool is this?! Tony Horton and Dreya Weber from the original P90X workout. My little heart raced with excitement! Or maybe it was racing from the workout.

Fitness Friday Link-Up

Hola amigos, today I’m linking up with the lovely ALG, Uninterrupted for Fitness Friday.

ALG Uninterrupted

I guess I’ll do a Friday – Friday recap of my workouts.

Friday:
I was home for the weekend and 유씨 took the day off work, so we went for a nice hike in the Verdugos. We booked the uphill climb, but took our time meandering back down, chatting and enjoying the beautiful morning.
Hiking, Verdugos, Beaudry North

Saturday:
I popped on the treadmill at our apartment gym for 4 miles while catching up on my soaps. This attempt at running was no bueno – I was slow, tired, and had very little stamina.
saturday run
Sunday:
I re-started Couch to 10K for the umpteenth time – I need the run/walk cues and I really want to speed up (I feel like I’ve been saying this for months now, but whatever).  The result was much better than the previous day.
sunday runMonday:
I had more soaps to watch, so another 3 miles on the treadmill.
Monday runTuesday:
I flew back to Mexico City and had no workout. Unless running around the airport counts?

Wednesday:
I barely made it to work at 9am – no workout. I slept like a log!

Thursday
:
Back with my workout buddies; we drew up a new schedule. Somehow we determined that today was Body Beast Build Legs. OUCH (By the way, Body Beast is on sale for $39.90 this month).
We have a new addition to our Beachbody Mexico City Fit Club and she’s killing it!

Friday (today):
My new workout buddy and I split up for cardio this morning – she hit the elliptical and I did Week 1, Day 3 of Couch to 10K. We reconvened for P90X Ab Ripper X. This is probably the best ab workout, ever. Ever!
P90X Ab Ripper X

So those are my workouts for the week – not great, because didn’t start my Body Beast/running/Ab Ripper X schedule until Thursday. I do not operate efficiently without a schedule! Who knows how much longer I’ll be in Mexico City, but I’ll stick to this routine for the next 2-3 months.

What exercise did you do this week? If you need help choosing a routine, let me know!

Body Beast Build: Legs

This morning I felt as if I’d been beat up – my chest, ribs, and arms are KILLING ME. That means I got a good workout yesterday.

Today was Legs. I was dreading it, because P90X Legs&Back never did much for me – I had to make up my own routine at the gym to get that shaky-I-can’t-walk feeling. I think I just didn’t know how to bring it for that workout.

Body Beast Build: Legs

But not with Body Beast – this workout was ridiculous. It’s about 40 minutes, but it took me about an hour because the exercises took me a while, and I had to pause several times during the step-up move. That was nearly impossible for me – I was supposed to step up on the bench while holding weights. This is a very familiar exercise since I used to do this move in my old The Firm videos, but in for Body Beast I had to propel myself up using momentum more than muscles. I think the bench was just too tall for me. For the guys in the video, the bench came just below their knees, but for me, it was higher than my knees. Next time I do this legs DVD, I’ll take down my old Fanny Lifter and use that.

Today’s weights were 10-, 12-, 15-, 20-, and 25 pounds. The heavier weights were fine for squats at the start of the workout, but I dropped waaay down for the lunges. I also couldn’t quite figure out how to do the deadlift with the barbell between my legs. I couldn’t figure out how to do it with just dumbbells, either. I’ll have to work on that.

I was hoping to get in a short run today, but that’s just not happening. I will just pop on the treadmill for a walk so I won’t be super-duper sore tomorrow.

Over all, this was a great leg workout. My legs are the flabbiest, most unattractive part of my body so they need the most work. Yes, I know, you can’t spot-reduce, but I’m still hopeful that when I finish Body Beast I won’t be embarrassed to wear shorts. Maybe.
