New year, new you. So, you have decided that 2015 will be the year that you finally take up running and stick to it.
Whether you are trying to lose weight and get in shape or you just fancy trying out a new form of exercise, taking up running is an excellent idea. It’s fun, easy to do and best of all, doesn’t cost you anything.
To help you become a confident and happy runner, we have put together a list of five fantastic tips to help you.
- Buy a good pair of running shoes
If you plan on running on a regular basis, it is vital that you invest in a good pair of running trainers. Otherwise, you may end up damaging your feet or knees.
When you are deciding on which shoes to buy, make sure to pick carefully. So many runners choose shoes simply for the looks, instead find a shoe that feels good and fits properly.
Before buying a pair of running shoes, make sure to get measured at the store. Don’t just assume your size, get measured so that you know you are buying the right sized pair of shoes.
If possible, go shopping for your new running shoes in the evening, instead of in the morning. You may not realise it, but your feet swell throughout the day, so a pair of trainers that fit at nine in the morning may no longer fit at five pm.
If you are going to go for a run, it is important that you are comfortable.
Whilst you might think that a pair of sweatpants are just as good for running in as specific running leggings, this is not the case. Sweatpants will feel too heavy and will make you feel too hot when you run. Whereas running leggings, are lightweight and breathable, making them perfect for wearing when exercising. For runners of all abilities, the more than sport running kit is ideal, and best of all, it isn’t too expensive.
- Take note of distance, not time
Instead of aiming to beat a certain time, take note of the distance you are running instead. Slow down and pace yourself, the aim isn’t to get to you finish point as quickly as possible, the aim to make sure you finish.
- Join a running group
Whilst it is also a good idea to run alone, there are lots of benefits of joining a running group.
Not only will joining a running group allow you to get all the information and advice you need, it will also save you money, as running clubs get discount in certain stores.
The primary benefit of joining a running group is safety. Whilst running alone is an excellent way to de-stress and clear your mind, it isn’t always safe, especially at night.
- Keep a running log
Keeping a running log will allow you to track your progress and goals. Plus, on days when you don’t feel like going for a run, it can be an excellent way to motivate you.
Note down every run you go on, what distance you have done and the time it took. Whilst the time isn’t that important, it is nice to look back and see how much you have improved. As well as writing down your times and run details, you could also use a running app or online site to keep track.
Have you vowed to get serious about running this year? I have! I’ll be following some of the suggestions in this article.
I am hoping to start running this year. I need to get a treadmill for our house, my neighborhood isn’t really conducive to running and there isn’t a gym that is convenient for me to get to with my work schedule and such….so I think having a treadmill here will be the way to do it! I know I need new running shoes! The shoes I currently work out in are fine for 30 mins a day but if I wear them out all day they bother my feet…not a good sign.
yes, shoes are critical!! it makes such a difference when your feet are happy
I also hope to start running this year. Would love to start doing 5k runs by the end of the year.
Ooh fun! I love racing. Have you seen the Couch to 5K app?
