Grease Live

Did anyone else watch Grease Live? I finally got around to it…
Now, I realize this performance was for a younger generation, so I had no idea who any of these actors/singer are, but I naturally compared them to the cast of the original movie.

Here were the real stars of the show: Rizzo and Marty!

Keke Palmer as Marty was perfect! Flirty, coquettish, and totally committed to getting her MRS degree. Marty from the movie was a little bit bland, but this portrayal was spot-on.

Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo was awesome. She was tough and vulnerable at the same time.

I was also thrilled to see Didi Conn – the original Frenchie in the movie – in Grease Live!

The best musical number of the night came from Boys II Men! Using them to sing Beauty School Dropout was genius.

The rest of the cast suffered in comparison to the original. I know that’s not fair since it was a live performance without the benefit of studio engineers tweaking recordings. A lot of the singing just sounded kind of shrill.

I’m really surprised how many people younger than me have never seen the Grease movie! It’s incredible – if you haven’t seen it, go watch it! You’ll be blown away.
