If you’ve read my blog before, you’ll know that I love going to the gym. You’ll also know that I love makeup. Something a lot of people wonder, is whether the gym and makeup mix. I think they do! Obviously I don’t think you should wear your ‘going out’ makeup while you’re on the treadmill, but there’s nothing wrong with tidying up your look. You never know who you might see in there! Here are a few of my tips for wearing makeup in the gym:
Simple Gym Makeup Routine
If you plan on wearing makeup in the gym, you should aim to make it as simple as possible. I always try to get a really fresh, bright eyed look. Some days I don’t wear any makeup at all, but when I do, I don’t want people to be able to tell that I’m wearing it. Here’s a rundown of my usual gym makeup routine:
- Tinted moisturiser with an SPF to freshen up my skin and look more awake. SPF is a must for everyday wear! The guys at http://www.chichicosmetics.com say that a thin layer is enough to cover imperfections and make skin look better.
- Concealer if I have any spots or dark circles.
- Curled lashes to open up my eyes and a touch of waterproof mascara. I’ve made the mistake of wearing regular mascara before and it isn’t pretty!
- Lipgloss or lip balm with an SPF.
- Eyebrow pencil to quickly fill in and define my eyebrows.
Lots of people say that if you wear makeup to the gym you’re not really there to work out. I think this is rubbish! If you want to wear makeup to the gym to feel more comfortable, then do so. Just be sensible, as nobody looks good with an inch of foundation melting off their face!
Don’t Touch Your Face
When you’re sweating in the gym, it can be hard not to touch your face. I do it instinctively sometimes without realising. Try to make a habit of stopping yourself, as you can end up with patches and marks, even when you’ve only brushed it! Carry a towel or some tissue with you if you sweat a lot, and dab your face carefully when you need it. Never rub your face!
Washing Your Face
I like to give myself a 30 minute time limit to wash my face after I’ve finished my workout. If you leave it too long, your skin can get clogged up thanks to the makeup and sweat. By making sure you wash your face thoroughly after a workout, you should be able to keep spots and imperfections at bay.
There you have it: my opinion on whether the gym and makeup should mix! If you feel more comfortable wearing a little makeup to the gym, don’t let anybody tell you that you should do otherwise. Do you agree with me? I’d love to hear your thoughts – leave a comment below!

I wear makeup to the gym, but that’s because I got after work. I’m not going to waste the time and energy it takes to take off my makeup before my workout, especially since my gym is in the town where I work and not in the town where I live.
