Travel Tuesday – Cholula, Mexico

Cholula Pueblo Magico, Cholula Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, Great Pyramid

I recently took a day trip to Cholula, Mexico.

Cholula is a couple of hours outside Mexico City and said to have 365 churches, the most prominent one being Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.
From the road, it looks like it’s a church on top of hill. I took this picture from the car.

But it’s really a church built on top of the New World’s largest pyramid! This was a shrine dedicated to Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent deity of ancient indigenous Mexico.
There are four levels of the pyramid that were built over the course of 1000 years – you can really see the different levels under the church in this photo:

Underneath the church are tunnels throughout the pyramids. We walked through the tunnels on the second level that are open for tourists.

These are stairs down to the first level, but they’re closed off to the public.

Stairs up to the third level, also closed off.  The fourth level can’t be seen from the tunnels that are open to tourists.

The exit door gives you an idea of how the tunnels go through the hill.

The exit is close to this stairway up to the church.

Outside the church complex is some more excavation of the Great Pyramid.

Explanations are written in Spanish, Nahuatl, and English.

My photos can’t really demonstrate how massive this pyramid complex is. Only a small percentage has been excavated, mainly because it cannot be reconstructed to its original state. Apparently there’s some sort of archaeological covenant that these ancient buildings cannot be reconstructed without knowing how it looked originally.

What was the last incredible thing you saw? Tell us all about it!
