I recently went on a weekend trip to the beautiful colonial town of Taxco, Guerrero.
Taxco’s terrain is…rugged. The bus trip from Mexico City is about 3 hours and twists and turns through the mountains. By the time we arrived at Taxco, I was no longer outraged by La Gaviota’s bribe…build the railroad!
Taxco is known as a silver mining town, so there was a shopportunity or several.
I may or may not have indulged a bit. These bracelets were about ~$20 for all three.
My friend and I stayed at Los Arcos hotel. Built in 1572, it retained the colonial charm of the Spanish style. It was cheap too – about $60/night.
Here’s the hotel’s lobby/dining area. Breakfast (not included) was delicious.
There are a few activities in Taxco, but for some reason we decided to take the cable car from Barrio Los Arcos to Monte Taxco. The cost is ~$6 for this death-defying trip.
Can you see the fear etched on my face? No? It was only a 5-minute ride. We took a taxi back down!
I lived…and the next day we hailed a cab and Julio Cesar was our driver. But he wasn’t just a driver…oh no, he was a bona fide tour guide!
If you’re in Taxco, call him, he’s awesome.
We asked to be driven to the statue of Jesus that overlooks the town. You probably know that Mexico is a rather religious country, and such displays of faith are abundant. I am always humbled and moved.
Up another twisty, curvy, foggy road is Las Pozas Azules. It wasn’t yet rainy season, so the swimming holes weren’t yet ready, but just look at these cascades! After months in completely urbanized Mexico City, this was -quite literally -a breath of fresh air.
I had helpful tour guides explain the rock formations, the history of the area, and other nearby natural attractions. They even held my hands for encouragement when I expressed trepidation about climbing up the rocks.
Taxco is now one of my favorite places in Mexico! I would love to return.
What’s your favorite place to visit?
The city looks beautiful!!!! I love all the details of that hotel. Such a cool place to stay!
It was incredible – I would have loved to stay longer
