Today we went on a hike along the Mt. Wilson Trail. I’m so disappointed in myself – I was slow and scared on this trail.
It was narrow, sure, and I’ve been wide hiking access roads lately, but I’ve done narrow trails in the Santa Anita Canyon. I think the problem was that there weren’t any trees or bushes on the outside of the trail, so the entire San Gabriel Valley stretched out before me.
But, as 유씨 pointed out, if I did fall, it’s not like I was going to plunge into the precipice – there was scrub and rocks, so the worst that would happen was that I’d get a few cuts and bruises. That did help my anxiety a bit.
Once we passed First Water, the trail wound inside the canyon so it didn’t feel so precarious. Probably because I couldn’t see the bottom.
We got as far as Orchard Camp, where we stopped and had lunch. I asked a couple of guys with a lot of gear if they had camped overnight, but they did not. Instead, they were training for the John Muir Trail so they hiked with all their gear. Smart!
I realized that we, too, were training for the John Muir Trail since 유씨 is keen on trying that in the next couple of years.
So I’ll work on getting used to these narrow trails.
Total distance was 7 miles on the nose.
Gorgeous scenery! However, I have to admit thinking abt hiking on narrow trails, especially if I can see the bottom, makes my hands sweat!
It’s crazy how much easier the hike was when I couldn’t see the canyon anymore. It was all in my head!
i’d be scared of hiking on narrow trails as well although i did reach the top of Jiri mountain and came down in one day when i was 14. it was an amazing and fullfilling experience seeing all the clouds below me but once is enough for me. lolz
Ooh I just Jiri-san looks absolutely gorgeous.
Fab blog post! I walked across Striding Edge on Helvellyn in the Lake District, UK. I was more nervous about the wind which were 60mph! It was a huge accomplishment for me to get across 🙂 I never blogged about it though, maybe I should?
