My Tips for a Natural Makeup Look

I find that in summer or when I’m at the gym, I want my makeup to look natural. Too much makeup, particularly foundation and powder, is not a good look when you are getting a little sweaty. Having a more natural look is easy, and a quicker look for everyday too. Here are my tips for creating a natural makeup look.

As with any makeup, start with a fresh, clean face. Make sure you have used a toner and then lightly exfoliate your face. This helps you to apply makeup much easier. For a natural look, you will be avoiding too much foundation, powder or concealer. Go for a tinted moisturiser instead. There are a lot of shades available. I’d say to go for one that is one shade darker than your skin. Use a few dots of concealer for any breakout areas, to help reduce the redness. Use this for under eye circles too. Dab a few dots and then blend. It is important to have a concealer that is matched to your skin tone or it will be obvious that you have some on.

If you have quite oily skin, you may need to apply a little powder. So apply some, but just use a little. Then go for a peachy toned blush, if that is something you usually use. If you have naturally rosy cheeks, then I wouldn’t consider using blush at all.

For your lashes, apply a few light coats of mascara. I have a golden rule that you can go without eyeshadow or liner but never mascara. Make sure that the lashes don’t clump together as this will make the makeup look unnatural. You could even consider using a clear mascara if you have darker eyelashes. If you are one of those annoying people that has sweeping long lashes, then you might not even need to wear mascara. If you’d like to enhance the length of your eyelashes, there are ways to do it. It looks much better than wearing falsies. Try using an eyelash serum like latisse 5ml and see the difference it can make.

If you want to use eyeshadow, go for a soft natural shade. Only apply a little and use it to shape your eye. This is done by using it on the brow bone, the eyelids and the inner corners of the eyes. I generally would avoid eyeliner when I’m going for a natural look. If you can’t go without, use a few small strokes on the lid only.

I like to use a lip balm on my lips to make sure that they are soft and moisturised. I find that this helps lipstick to stay on better too. If you want, a lip balm might be all that you want to use. If you want a subtle amount of colour, then go for a shade that isn’t too dissimilar to the normal colour of your lips. We’re going for natural, right? So no bright pinks or reds, please!

  1. Great tips! When I go natural, it’s eliminating foundation altogether and it is during the summer months that I do this. My freckles pop out when the summer sun hits my face–even WITH tons of sunscreen the freckles still appear–but I like them so it’s all good. What I absolutely cannot do is go without penciling my brows in or, like you, mascara, but I do add a thin swipe of liner on my upper lids. Lastly. Chapstick on my lips. Chapstick is my addiction. BTW–I stopped reading your post at “exfoliation” to put a facial mask on then came back to continue. You have made me take a step in skin care today! Thank you!

I'd love to hear from you
