Soggy Saturday

Last weekend I went for a walk on Saturday evening, after work. I headed up to the Zócalo, the main plaza of Mexico City. The Zócalo – also called Plaza de la Constitucion – is surrounded by the Catedral Metropolitano, Palacio Nacional, and Antiguo Palacio del Ayuntamiento (the original town hall). The square is typically thronged.

Until it starts raining. Then, everyone just kind of disappears. They seek shelter in the subway, the cathedral, nearby shops, and…well, I just don’t know where all these folks go when it starts to rain. Afternoon thunderstorms are pretty common here, so I am sure that locals have a system to wait out the rain.

Not this chica, though. Me, I stayed outside and enjoyed it. I never see rain like this at home, so I thought the sudden storm was exciting and fun.

I reconsidered my idea of “exciting and fun” when I had to walk two miles back to the hotel in sodden shoes and jeans. No bueno. It was a good leg workout though – kind of like walking with ankle weights. Heavy ankle weights.

  1. I love the rain when I don’t have to walk in it too much. I could sit watching it come down for hours. Definitely no bueno on the wet shoes and jeans, but sounds like you enjoyed yourself regardless!

    1. It’s incredible to see the sky cloud over and storm and then it’s clear again in 20 minutes.

  2. I love the rain. I love the mood, it’s just relaxing. It looks beauitful though! Hopefully you still had fun. I’m heading to Maryland next week & I’m so excited!

  3. I grew up in a rainy state so I find a good rain storm so relaxing. Not a big fan of walking with heavy wet shoes though, you are right it is like a workout!

    1. I don’t know how long I’ll be here; looks like there is another deadline looming so it will be a couple of months. It’s kind of fun living in a hotel!

  4. I love rainy days. I’m a Seattle girl and am incredibly homesick for grey days, my rain boots and trudging to work with a warm coffee in my hand. It’s crazy how people just disappear when it rains. It’s just water.

    1. I can completely see the appeal of Seattle now that I’ve been in Mexico City for a few weeks. It’s such a nice break from hot, dry, sunny, fires…

I'd love to hear from you
