Top 5 Books for 2013

Before I Forget by Leonard Pitts Jr.

Since getting a tablet for my birthday, I’ve been reading nonstop. I love that I can check out e-books from the library, and I find myself carrying my tablet around just in case I have an opportunity to read. I was positive I was one of those people who despair of e-readers, who hold fast to paper books and shelves full of favorites…nope. I donated all my books to Goodwill and have uncluttered shelves.

Even before I got my tablet, I set a goal for myself in Goodreads to read 30 books for 2013, but as of today I’ve read 61. An e-reader just makes it so easy to read books.

Here are my top 5 books for 2013 (in the order I read them):

1. Small Kindnesses by Satya Robyn
Small Kindnesses by Satya Robyn
The main character of this book is a Leonard, a widower who is trying to find out what secret his late wife was hiding from him. While I thought the secret was predictable, Leonard is so charming that I was sorry when the story ended. I would have liked to have Leonard as a neighbor or a co-worker.
This book was a freebie from Book Gorilla – if you’ve got a Kindle you should definitely sign up for the daily email to see what’s free that day because there are a lot of gems.

2. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I read this book for Bloggers’ Book Club and I’m so glad it was chosen. The characters in this book were so well-developed that they seemed so real. Several characters narrated this story so I got nuanced points of view on the very complicated situation. I’ve been working through other books by this author and she hasn’t disappointed me yet.

3. Before I Forget by Leonard Pitts Jr.

This was another freebie from Book Gorilla. The book weaves together the tragic stories of three generations of estranged fathers and sons. Each man has serious shortcomings that he tries to overcome.

4. A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson
A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson
I read about this author on the last Literary Junkies Link-Up (thanks Bailey Dailies!) and I couldn’t put this down once I started reading it. This is about three generations of women  with some pretty serious life challenges.

5. Maeve Binchy

Okay, that’s an author, not a book.  I loved these novels set in Dublin with characters that weave in and out of the different stories. I knew nothing of Ireland before reading Binchy’s books, but now it’s definitely on my to-visit lis.

What books did you read this year?

    1. Ooh, I’ve been wanted to read Andre Agassi’s book – thanks for reminding me about it! I just put it on my library list.

  2. Thanks for this post!
I’m definitely signing up for Book Gorilla!
I should read more not just blog post reading.
This year I tried to read old classics in English. I loved Jules Verne when I was a girl, so I read quite a few of his. Right now I’m reading Les Miserables occasionally(!) and they are still talking about bishop Myriel. LoL

  3. I will be using this list soon when I finally finish the 5th book in the Game of Thrones series. Maeve Binchy sounds like an author I will have to check out thanks for sharing and congrats on making your goal:)

    1. I’ve been searching for similar authors – I like reading about everyday people living their everyday lives.

I'd love to hear from you
